What is 5G?

In this time of technical development, ‘5G’ has become more popular with leading network operators providing more coverage all around the country – this super-fast fifth-generation mobile internet is already on offer! But what is it?

What is ‘5G’?

5G is the next generation of mobile broadband that will offer much faster download and upload speeds. Drastically reducing the time it takes for devices to communicate with wireless networks.

It differs slightly than our current 4G due to high & low band spectrum's but you can find more information on that here

What will it allow us to do?

Improved Broadband – It will provide faster upload and downloads speeds, creating a more connected world, providing even easier access to the World Wide Web.

Public Safety & Infrastructure – 5G will allow cities and other areas to operate more efficiently. “Utility companies will be able to easily track usage remotely, sensors can notify public works departments when drains flood or streetlights go out, and municipalities will be able to quickly and inexpensively install surveillance cameras.”

Internet of Things – 5G speeds will enhance the current IoT, connecting billions of devices without human intervention, providing the opportunity to change industrial processes including manufacturing and business communications for the better.

How much quicker is 5G?

Theoretically, 4G tops out at 100 megabits per second (Mbps), 5G however, tops out at 10 Gigabits per second (Gdps). Effectively making it one hundred times faster than our currently 4G.

But what does this mean? An example given from the Consumer Technology Association, that at this speed it would take you 3.6 seconds to download at a two-hour movie on 5G. 4G, well this would take 6 minutes on 4G.

There’s more, due to reduced latency we’ll see faster loading times and quicker response rates from almost anything that uses the internet!

When is 5G available?

5G is already available in the UK with network carriers including EE, O2, Vodafone, BT Mobile & Sky. Though make sure your device is 5G ready! Throughout 2020 we’ll see a large number of new devices available for 5G alongside mobiles like the Samsung S20 or Samsung Note 10+.
